Kansas City is famed for barbecue, but the taco scene is quietly booming. Whether you want street-style, birria, or classic al pastor, there are hidden gems across suburban areas too. I scoped out some top picks in Grain Valley, Oak Grove, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Independence, downtown KC, and the Northland. Here’s your local taco bucket list.

Grain Valley

Here’s a rough route idea:

1. Start in Grain Valley  El Tequilazo, El Maguey, Riviera Maya

2. Head west to Lee’s Summit  Tipsy Taco

3. Swing south / east to Blue Springs  Agaveros

4. Then over to Independence  Casa Mexico / Queen Taco

5. Drive into Downtown KC / Midtown  El Camino Real, Taco Naco, GG’s

6. Finally, head north to the Northland  Champion Burritos, Chef Tito’s, In-A-Tub

That gives a full taco day or multi-day crawl (depending on how many stops you make!

Tips for the Trail

• Order street tacos or al pastor / barbacoa / carne asada where possible for the “real deal.”

• Ask for corn tortillas when available they make a big difference.

• If a spot has birria or consommé, it’s often a sign they’re doing things seriously.

• Time your stops some places have limited evening hours.
